To help you navigate the world of SEO, here are some tried-and-true tips specifically tailored to photographers:

What phrases or terms are your prospective clients using to find photographers in your field? Tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs or SE Ranking can help you identify the most relevant keywords, providing insights into search volume, competition, and keyword difficulty.

Once you've gathered a list of keywords, strategically incorporate them into your website’s content. Be careful not to overload your pages—focus on a few key terms per page and write for the human, not for search engines.

We'll talk about local SEO later in this article, which is especially important for photographers serving specific geographic locations!

One slight improvement I'd recommend to make it more SEO friendly is to end with /wedding-photography/ instead of just /weddings/... but that's me being a little picky.

For photographers operating in a specific geographic area, local SEO is essential. The two most important things you can do to start on the right foot are to:

  1. include location-specific keywords.
  2. sign up for a Google Business profile.

Let's do a quick rundown of what location-specific keywords means for a photography business in Jacksonville (and then apply this knowledge to your on location):

If you're a Jacksonville wedding photographer and you target a broad term like "wedding photographer" what do you think the results look like in search?

Well, the first 2 results I get are for "Best Of" lists in my area. And while Google serves results based on the searcher's area generally it's not targeted or exact. You'll see my next two results are for a wedding photographer site in my area as well as Reddit.

Not too bad but if you check out the next results, you'll see one for a Celeste Burns Photography. After digging through her site, I can't find any information about the location she serves.

So, to some extent, your competition can be random and that's not useful!

So what do you do about it?

Narrow down to the area you're based in, for starters.

Check out what happens when we simply change the search to "Jacksonville wedding photographer":

Not only are my search results much more aligned with exactly what I'm looking for in the location I need, but you'll notice that the Map Pack shows up first.

And this is where having your Google Business Profile optimized comes in handy as well.

Having accurate, up-to-date, and consistent NAP (Name, Address, and Phone Number) increases your chances of appearing in local search results and Google Maps.

Encourage happy clients to leave positive reviews on Google and other platforms—reviews are a key factor in local search rankings and help establish trust with potential clients.

9. Keep an Eye on Performance

Once your SEO strategy is in place, the work isn’t done. Use free tools like Google Search Console and Google Analytics to monitor how your website is performing. These tools provide valuable insights into traffic, search rankings, and user behavior (including lead generation), helping you make informed decisions about where to adjust your strategy.

Caution: Daily and weekly fluctuations of ranking and traffic are not indicators of trends and should never drive decisions about whether or not your strategy is working. Google algorithm updates, SERP volatility, seasonality, events, and other factors can create fluctuations in rankings. You'll drive yourself crazy if you watch these numbers on a daily basis. You can really start gauging the health of the work you've been doing looking at month over month data, at a minimum.

Be patient, though, because SEO takes time, even when utilizing best practices! It's not uncommon, especially for brand new businesses, to not see consistent, measurable ranking and traffic for 6 months to a year.
